A vessel of volume 20 litres contains a mixture of hydrogen and helium at temperature of 27oC and pressure 2.0 atm.The mass of the mixture is 5g.Assuming the gases to be ideal,the ratioof the mass of hydrogen to that of helium in the given mixture will be approximately:

The correct option is A 1:2
n1 moles of hydrogen and n2 moles of helium

m1=n1M1

m2=n2M2

where M is the molar mass.

Total mass =m1+m2=5gm

=n1M1+n2M2=5gm.....(i)

Total moles =n1+n2=n(say).........(ii)

From equation (i) and (ii) we can say,

n1=nM25M2M1


n2=5nM1M2M1

From ideal gas equation,

PV=nRT

=220=00.0821293

n=1.66

m1m2= M1M2 ×nM255nM1

Putting the values of n=1.66, M1=2 and M2=4, we get as,

m1m2=0.5=1:2
