Question

A vessel, whose bottom has round holes with diameter 0.1 mm, is filled with water. The maximum height (in cm) up to which water can be filled without leakage is
(Take Surface Tension due to water as 75 dynecm,acceleration due to gravity g=1000cms2)

Solution

Given
D (diameter) =0.1 mm=0.01 cm
Density of water ρ=1 g/cm3
Surface Tension due to water is 75 dynecm
Total upward force by surface tension = Weight of the water in tube
π×D×T=π(D/2)2×h×ρ×g

π×(0.01)×75=π×(0.012)2×h×1×1000
h=0.075×0.01×40.01×0.01=0.3 m=30 cm
