Question

A vibrating tuning fork, held over an air column of a given length with its one end closed, produces a loud audible sound. Name the phenomenon responsible for it and explain the observation.

Solution

This phenomenon is called resonance of the air column.

The tuning fork, held over an air column, vibrates the air column.

The sound wave is reflected at the bottom of the air column and returns back.

Therefore a stationary wave is formed in the air column.

The air in contact with the bottom surface does not vibrate. This is termed as node.

The amplitude of vibration gradually increases away from the bottom surface.

If the length of air column is equal to the 1/4th, or 3/4th, or 5/4 Th etc, of the wavelength of the wave, the vibration of air near the top surface is the maximum or resonance is set up. This is termed as antinode.

The sound heard is the maximum and the frequency of the sound wave is the same as that of the tuning fork.
