Question

A wave travels along the positive x- direction with a speed of 20 ms1.The amplitude of the wave is 0.20 cm and the wavelength 2.0 cm.
(a) write a suitable wave equation which describes this wave.
(b) What is the displacement and velocity of the particle at x=2.0 cm at time t=0 according to the wave equation written ?

Solution

Wave speed, v=20m/s
A=0.20cm
λ=2cm
(a) Equation of wave along the x-axis
y=Asin(kxwt)
k=2π/λ=2π/2=πcm1
T=λ/v=2/2000=1/1000sec=103sec
ω=2π/T=2π×103sec1
So, the wave equation is,
y=(0.2cm)sin[(πcm1)x(2π×103sec1)t]

(b) At x=2cm, and t=0
y=(0.2cm)sin(π/2)=0
v=rωcosπx=0.2×2000π×cos2π=400π
=400×(3.14)=1256cm/s
=400πcm/s=4πm/s
