Plastids of higher plants are semi-autonomous, double membrane bound structures. The green plastids or chloroplast carry out the process of photosynthesis. The chloroplasts are comprised of stroma and thylakoid lamellae. The thylakoid lamellae may be arranged one above the other in a stack called grana. Light reaction occurs in thylakoid membranes whereas dark reaction occurs in the stroma. De Von Wettstein reported a well-organized system of grana and stroma in barley.
