Question

A well with 10 m inside diameter is dug 8.4 m deep. Earth taken out of it is spread all around it to a width of 7.5 m to form an embankment. Find the height of the embankment.

Solution

Diameter of the well =10 m

Radius (r) = 102=5 m
Depth (h) =8.4 m
Volume of earth dug out = πr2h
=227×5×5×8.4 m3=660 m3
Width of embankment=7.5 m
Outer radius(R)=5+7.5=12.5 m
Area of embankment = π(R2r2)
= 227[(12.5)252]
= 227(12.5+5)(12.55)
= 227×17.5×7.5 m2=412.5 m2
Let h be the height of embankment, then
Volume of embankment =412.5h=660
h=660412.5m
h=1.6019 m1.6 m
