(a) The original name for the radiations given out by radioactive elements is Becquerel rays.
(b) (i) They affect photographic plates.
(ii) They ionise the gas through which they pass.
(iii) They can penetrate through matter. The range of penetration depends upon the nature of radioactive source and density of matter.
(iv) They are affected by electrostatic and magnetic fields.
