(a) Compounds of carbon and hydrogen are called hydrocarbons. Examples are methane and ethane.

(b) Saturated hydrocarbons contain carbon-carbon single bonds only while unsaturated hydrocarbons contain at least one carbon-carbon double or triple bond.

Examples of saturated hydrocarbons include ethane and butane while propene and hexyne are examples of unsaturated hydrocarbons.
