(a) What are metalloids? Name two metalloids.
(b) Classify the following elements into metals,non-metals, and metalloids:
Copper, Sulphur, Aluminium, Oxygen, Silicon, Nitrogen, Germanium, Mercury, Chlorine, and Sodium.
a) Metalloids: Elements that show some properties of metals and some other properties of nonmetals are called metalloids. Metalloids look like metals but they are brittle like nonmetals. Metalloids are typically semiconductors which means that they both insulate and conduct electricity. The semiconductor property makes metalloids very useful as a computer chip material. They are also called semi-metals.
b) Metalloids : Boron(B), Silicon(Si) and Germanium(Ge).
Metals: Copper, Aluminum, Mercury, Sodium
Non-metals: Oxygen, Sulfur, Nitrogen, Chlorine
