a) The Basic criteria to decide whether something is alive or not is the Movement. If the organisms can move, then it must be Alive.
For some organism s such as Plants which cannot move, scientific Methods and testing is used.

b) The basic functions performed by the living organisms to maintain there life on the Earth is called as Life Process.

The Basic life Process which are common to all the Living Organisms are---
Nutrition
Excretion
Respiration
Control and Cordination
Growth
Movement
Reproduction.
