(a) What happens when ethanol is oxidised with alkaline potassium permanganate (or acidified potassium dichromate)? Write the equation of the reaction involved.

(a) When ethanol reacts with alkaline potassium permanganate or acidified potassium dichromate, ethanoic acid is formed because they are strong oxidising agents.The chemical equation is:

CH3CH2OH + 2[O] CH3COOH + H2O

(b) CH3COOH and HCOOH will turn blue litmus red because it is acidic in nature.
