Solution

(a) Air is a mixture of gases - nitrogen, oxygen, carbon(IV) oxide, water vapor and noble gases.

By volume, dry air contains 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.04% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases. Air also contains a variable amount of water vapor, on average around 1% at sea level, and 0.4% over the entire atmosphere.

(b) Air pollution occurs when harmful or excessive quantities of substances including gases, particulates, and biological molecules are introduced into Earth's atmosphere. It may cause diseases, allergies and even death to humans; it may also cause harm to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, and may damage the natural or built environment . Both human activity and natural processes can generate air pollution.

Air pollution is caused by both natural as well as human activities. There are basically two sources of air pollution which is mentioned below:

  1. Natural sources - The natural sources of air pollution include dust storms, volcanoes, pollen grains, ash produced from smoking and decomposition of organic matters.
  2. Man made sources - The manmade sources of air pollution include overpopulation, urbanization, industrial wastage, deforestation and many more.
