Solution

(a) Decomposition reaction -

  • A reaction in which a compound breaks into its constituent elements Such that these products of decomposition do not recombine to form the original compound is called a decomposition reaction.
  • Decomposition may occur in the presence of heat, light or by the passage of an electric current.
  • Example - 2HgO(s)2Hg(l)+O2(g)MercuryoxideMercuryOxygen

(b) Decomposition

1. By heat - Decomposition of calcium carbonate on heating to produce calcium oxide and carbon dioxide.

CaCO3(s)1000°CHeatCaO(s)+CO2(g)CalciumcarbonateCalciumoxideCarbondioxide

2. By light - Decomposition of silver chloride in presence of sunlight to produce silver and chlorine gas.

2AgCl(s)sunlight2Ag(s)+Cl2(l)SilverchlorideSilverChlorine

3. By electricity - Decomposition of water by the passage of electric current to produce hydrogen and oxygen gas.

2H2O(l)electrolysis2H2(g)+O2(g)WaterHydrogenOxygen
