Question

(a) What is meant by uniform circular motion? Give two examples of uniform circular motion.

(b) The tip of seconds' hand of a clock takes 60 seconds to move once on the circular dial of the clock. If the radius of the dial of the clock is 10.5 cm, calculate the speed of the tip of the second's hand of the clock. (Givenπ=227).

Solution

(a) Uniform circular motion can be described as the motion of an object in a circle at a constant speed.
Eg:
1. Motion of moon around earth.
2. An athlete running on a circular track with constant speed.

(b)

Speed along a circular path = Circumference of circleTime Taken

Circumference = 2 cross times 22 over 7 cross times 10.5 = 66 cm = 0.66 m

Time taken = 60 seconds

Speed =fraction numerator 0.66 over denominator 60 end fraction equals 0.011 bevelled m over s
