(a) Potable water is water that is considered safe to drink. It has been either treated, cleaned, or filtered, and meets local, established drinking water standards. Potable water is assumed to be reasonably free of harmful bacteria and contaminants and also considered safe to use in cooking and baking.
(i). The boiling method is straightforward to use and doesn’t greatly affect the way your water tastes. It’s very effective when done properly.
(ii). Standard chlorine bleach provides another option for treating water. Bleach can add and different taste for water. The advantage is that it only takes a little bleach to treat a gallon of water.
Moreover, the potable water would be tap water from treated municipal water systems or water that has been UV filtered, distilled, or purified by reverse osmosis.
Using water filters: Water filters can remove bacteria in the water. Carbon on the other hand gets rid of the chemicals and awful tastes while iodine coated screens can further remove viruses. Treated water can be consumed after the treatment and the water has no bad taste. However, they are heavier than iodine or chlorine, more costly and needs manual pumping. Also, you will need to clean the filters after the activity and at some point; you will need to replace them after treating several gallons of water.
