Question

(a) What is rate of reaction? Write two factors that affect the rate of reaction.

(b) The rate constant of a first order reaction increases from 4×102 to 8×102 when the temperature changes from 27C to 37C.
Calculate the energy of activation (Ea). (log 2 =0.301, log 3 =0.4771, log 4 =0.6021)

Solution

(a) Rate of a reaction is defined as the change in the concentration of any one of the reactants or products per unit time.

TWO factors affecting rate of a reaction are :

(i) Concentration of reactants
(ii) Temperature.

(b) T1=27C+273=300K

T2=37C+273=310K

k1=4×102sec1k2=8×102sec1

logk2k1=Ea2.303R(T2T1T2×T1)

log8×1024×102=Ea2.303×8.314×310300310×300

log2=Ea19.147142×1093000

0.3010=Ea178068.4

or Ea=178068.4×0.3010
