(a) What is the noise? Give two examples of sounds which are considered noise.
(b) What is a musical sound? Give two examples of musical sounds.
(a) Noise is unwanted sound judged to be unpleasant, loud or disruptive to hear. From a physics standpoint, noise is indistinguishable from sound, as both are vibrations through a medium, such as air or water. The difference arises when the brain receives and perceives a sound. Household sources: Gadgets like food mixer, grinder, vacuum cleaner, washing machine and dryer, cooler, air conditioners, can be very noisy and injurious to health. Others include loud speakers of sound systems and TVs, ipods and ear phones.
(b) Musical sounds are periodic and somewhat regular. They are pleasing to our ears and minds, and sound has been one of the greatest forms of expression since the beginning of time. Eg. Piano, flute.
