Question

A wheel starting from rest is uniformly acceleration at 4rad/s2 for 10 seconds. It is allowed to rotate uniformly for the next 10 seconds and is finally brought to rest in the next 10 seconds. Find the total angle rotated by the wheel.

Solution

Initial angular velocity, ωo=0

Displacement in first 10 sec

θ1=ω0t1+12α1t21=0+12×4×102=200rad

Angular velocity after 10 sec

ω1=ωo+α1t2

ω1=0+4×10=40rads1

Displacement in next 10 sec

θ2=ω1t=40×10=400rad

Deceleration in later 10 sec

ω2=ω1+α2t3

α2=ω2ω1t3=04010=4rads1

Displacement in later 10 sec

θ2=ω1t3+12α2t3

θ2=40×10+12×(4)×10

θ3=200rad

Total angular displacement, θtotal=θ1+θ2+θ3=200+400+200=800rad

Hence, total angular displacement is 800rad
