Question

(a) Which property of water enables it to modify the climate?

(b) The density of water varies with temperature. What are its consequences?

(c) State the melting point, boiling point, specific heat capacity, specific latent heat of fusion and specific latent heat of vaporization of water.

Solution

(a) Water has a high specific heat. Specific heat is the amount of energy required to change the temperature of a substance. Because water has a high specific heat, it can absorb large amounts of heat energy before it begins to get hot. It also means that water releases heat energy slowly when situations cause it to cool. Due to this, water cools off more slowly in the evening and it warms up more slowly during the day. So the organisms living in the water have a more stable environment. Hence, water's high specific heat allows for the moderation of the Earth's climate and helps organisms regulate their body temperature more effectively.

(b) density = mass/volume

As temperature increases, volume increases and volume is inversely proportional to density so as volume increases density decreases. this shows that density varies with temperature.

(c) 1) The melting point of ice is 0℃.
2) The boiling point of water is 100℃.
3) The specific heat capacity of water is 4.2 J/g.
4) The specific latent heat of fusion of ice is 336 J/g.
5) The specific latent heat of vaporization of water is 2268 J/g.
