Solution

part a): 1 Mark
part b): 4 Marks

a) A convex lens is used in a magnifying glass.

b) Consider an object AB lying between the focus F1 and the optical centre O of the lens. A ray of light parallel to the principal axis after refraction through the lens passes through F2. Another ray from the same point after passing through the optical centre goes straight along its path. The two rays do not meet, but when produced backwards they appear to meet at A' which is the virtual

image of the point A. From A', draw A' B' perpendicular to the principal axis. Thus, A' B' is the virtual, magnified and erect image of the object AB.
