Question

A white crystal compound N when warmed with concentrated sulphuric acid gives a gas that turns fumes into ammonia. When N is warmed with sodium hydroxide solution gas is evolved which turns moist red litmus paper blue.

Identify the solid N and name the two gases that evolved in each case.

Solution

Step 1:

  • When Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl)white crystalline salt reacts with concentrated Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) gives a gas that turns fumes into Ammonia also Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
  • The chemical Reaction is as follows.

2NH4Cl(s)Ammoniumchloride+H2SO4(l)Sulphuricacid(NH4)2SO4(s)Ammoniumsulfate+2HCl(g)Hydrochloricacid

Step: 2: The reaction between Ammonium chloride with Sodium hydroxide:

  • When Ammonium chloride reacts with Sodium hydroxide gives Ammonia (NH3), Water (H2O), and Sodium chloride (NaCl). Here, the solution of ammonia in water turns red litmus paper blue.
  • The chemical reaction is as follows.

NH4Cl(aq)Ammoniumchloride+NaOH(aq)SodiumhydroxideNH3(g)Ammonia+H2O(l)Water+NaCl(aq)Sodiumchloride

Thus, Solid “N” is (NH4Cl)and two gases that are involved in step 1 and step 2 are Hydrochloric acid (HCl) and Ammonia (NH3)
