(b) What is :

(i) basic lead carbonate and

(ii) brown powder deposit on iron?

(c) Why is hydrogen kept in the metal activity series?

Solution

(a) Alkali metals are very reactive,They react with oxygen, water vapour and carbondioxide in the atmosphere to produce oxides, hydroxides and carbonates. To prevent these reactions alkali metals are kept in kerosene oil.

(b)
(i)White lead is the basic lead carbonate, 2PbCO₃·Pb(OH)₂. It is a complex salt, containing both carbonate and hydroxide ions. White lead occurs naturally as a mineral.

(ii)the brown powder is ferric oxide Fe2O3. It is called rust.

(C)Hydrogen is included in the reactivity series of metals because it's property of electroposivity (i.e losing electron to form positive ion) is similar to that of metals, thats why we can relate it with metals.
