(a) Why is high temperature avoided in the preparation of hydrogen chloride from sodium sulphate and concentrated sulphuric acid?
(b) Sodium chloride is preferred for the preparation of HCI. Why? [2 MARKS]

(a) High temperature is avoided because it results in the formation of hard crust of Na2SO4 which sticks to the apparatus and its removal becomes difficult. The glass apparatus in which the reaction is carried out may also break at high temperature.
(b) Sodium chloride is cheap, therefore, it is preferred for preparation of HCI over other metal chlorides.
