Question

A wire of a given material having length l and area of cross-sectional A has a resistance of 4 . What would be the resistance of another wire of the same material having length l2 and area of cross-section 2A?

Solution

We know that, R=ρlA
For first wire:

R=ρlA=4 Ω

Now, For the second wire:
Now, R=ρlA ......(1)

Here
l=l2 and
A=2A
Putting the values in equation (1).
R=ρlA=ρl22A=ρl4A=44=1 Ω

So, the resistance of the new wire is 1Ω.
