Question

A wire of length 4 m and cross-sectional area 1 mm2 is carrying a current of 2 A. If each cubic metre of the material contains 1029 free electrons. The average time taken by an electron to cross the length of the wire is ____ ×103 s. (Give integer value)

Solution

Drift velocity , Vd=inAe

From the data given in the question,

Vd=21029×1×106×1.6×1019

Vd=21.6×104 ms1

Average time ,t=lVd

Substituting the given data we get,

t=4(21.6)×104

=2×1.6×104 s

=32×103 s

Accepted answer : 32
