Question

A wire CD of length l=0.5 m and mass m=1 kg is sliding without friction on conducting rails as shown. The vertical rails are connected together with a resistance R=4 Ω. A uniform magnetic field B=1 T is applied perpendicular to the plane of wires such that CD moves with a constant velocity v. Calculate v(in m/s).
(Give integer value only)

Solution

Emf induced in the circuit is,

E=Bvl=1×v×0.5=0.5v

Current flowing in the circuit is,

i=ER=0.5v4

Force acting on wire due to magnetic field,

F1=ilB

=(0.5v4)×0.5×1=2.5v×1014 N

Since, wire is moving with constant speed, therefore, magnetic force acting on the wire is equal to the force of gravity.

mg=ilB

12×10=2.5×101v4

v=80 m/s

Correct answer: 80
