Question

(a) With the help of examples, describe how metal oxides differ from non-metal oxides.
(b) Which of the following elements would yield: 9i) an acidic oxide, (ii) a basic oxide, and (iii) a neutral oxide?
Na, S, C, K, H

Solution

(a) Metal oxides;
They are usually solid at room temperature.
They are basic in nature
If they dissolve they form alkaline solutions.

Non metal oxide;
Usually gaseous at room temperature.
Are acidic in nature.
Dissolve in water to form acidic solutions.

Ex.
Metallic oxides are basic . react with acid to form salt . react with water to form base
CaO + H2O------>Ca(OH)2

non metallic oxides are acidic. reacts with wter to form acids
N2O5 +H2O----->2HNO3

b)Non-Metals C and S will form acidic oxide i.e. SO2 and CO2
Metals Na and K will form basic oxide i.e. Na2O and K2O
Hydrogen will form neutral oxide i.e. H2O - Water
