Question

A woman with blood group O married a man with blood group AB. Show the possible blood groups of the progeny. List the alleles involved in this inheritance.

Open in App
Solution

ABO blood group system has three alleles, A, B and O. Any person has two alleles of these three in any combinations. In the above case, women with blood group O marries a man with blood group AB.
Hence, the parents have the following genotypes:
Mother - I^O I^O, Father- I^A I^B
Using the Punnet square technique, the possible blood groups in the progeny are as given:

I^O I^O
I^AI^A I^OI^A I^O
I^BI^B I^OI^B I^O
Hence, the possible genotypes are I^A I^O and I^B I^O
Therefore possible phenotypes are- Blood Group A and Blood group B.
