Solution

a) Write equations for the steps in SN1 mechanism of the conversion of tert. butyl bromide into tert. butyl alcohol.
(CH3)3CBrslowstep−−−−(CH3)3C++Br
(CH3)3C++OH(CH3)3COH
b)
CH3OHRed P−−Cl2CH3ClANaI−−−−−−dryacetoneCH3IBC6H5I−−−−−−−−−Na and dry etherCH3C6H5C
Methanol reacts with red P/Cl2 to form methyl chloride. Cl is then replaced with I by reaction with NaI/dryacetone In the final step, CH3I is coupled with C6H5I to form C6H5CH3. The reaction is called the Wurtz–Fittig reaction.
