Question

(a) Write the name and formula of an organic compound containing a ketone functional group.
(b) Write the names and formulae for the first three members of the homologous series of chloroalkanes.
(c) How would you name the following compound?
CH3CH2Br

Solution

(a) Propanone (CH3O||CCH3 ) is one of the organic compounds comprising a ketone functional group (CO).

(b) The general formula of chloroalkanes (haloalkanes) is CnH2n+1X (where, X is Cl, Br or I).

Therefore, the first three members of the chloroalkane series will be:
Chloromethane (CH3Cl)
Chloroethane (C2H5Cl)
Chloropropane (C3H7Cl)

(c) The name of the compound is bromoethane, as the structure has the parent alkane. It contains 2 carbon atoms, and its one hydrogen atom is replaced by a halo group (-X or bromine) atom. So, the name of the compound is bromoethane.
