Question

A Zener of power rating 1 W is to be used as a voltage regulator. If zener has a breakdown of 5 V and it has to regulate voltage which fluctuated between 3 V and 7 V, what should be the value of Rs for safe operation (Fig.)?

Solution

Given:

P=1 watt

Zener breakdown voltage =5 V

Minimum voltage, Vmin=3 V

Maximum voltage, Vmax=7 V

As we know,

Current =IZ max=PVz

Therefore, by putting the values in the given equation we get,

IZ max=15=0.2 A

By using V=IR

Rs=VmaxVminIZ max

Rs=730.2=40.2

Rs=20 Ω

Final Answer:Rs=20 Ω
