Aarushi is trying to recreate the atmosphere in her laboratory. But, she finds that the labels are missing from the containers. She knows that nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide are stored in separate containers and one bottle contains a mixture of other gases, dust particles and water vapour. The containers are shown below -

Look at the containers and based on the concepts about constituents of air, help Aarushi to put the labels back on the containers.

We know that the atmosphere consists of 78% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, 0.04% carbon dioxide and 1% other gases, dust particles and water vapours. So, clearly if we have to recreate the atmosphere, the quantity of these things must be in the order given -

Nitrogen > oxygen > mixture of other gases, dust particles and water vapours > carbon dioxide

Now when we look at the containers, we will find that they are of different sizes. A is largest, C is smaller than A but larger than D and B is smallest. Based on the above order and observation of the size of containers, we can assume that nitrogen can be in A, oxygen in C, mixture of other gases, dust particles and water vapours in D and carbon dioxide in B.

However, we need to do some tests also to check our prediction. Bring a burning candle near container A and allow the gas over the flame. If the flame extinguishes it certainly is nitrogen because nitrogen doesn't support burning.

Now, again bring a burning candle near container B. If it extinguishes again, it is carbon dioxide because even carbon dioxide doesn't support burning.

Do the same for C, in this case if the candle burns more vigorously then it definitely is oxygen.

Now, the only thing left is D with mixture of other gases, dust particles and water vapours. Just to be sure, take it in a dark room and allow a beam of light to fall on the container. If you see small particles moving randomly in the beam, then it surely has dust particles.
