AB is a current carrying conductor in the plane of the paper as shown in Figure. What are the directions of magnetic fields produced by it at points P and Q? Given r1>r2, where will the strength of the magnetic field be larger?
As per the right hand thumb rule, the direction of magnetic field will be anti-clockwise around the conductor.
Now, let us imagine the plane of the paper to be the plane of the conductor. So at P, the field lines will be into the plane and that at Q will be out of the plane of the paper.
Since, the magnetic field is stronger near the conductor; the strength of magnetic field will be larger at r2 when compared to r1.
