These are produced by recombinant DNA technology. This technology involves insertion of the gene of interest into the host cell to get it expressed. The recombinant host cells are cultured on a large scale to enable mass production. The proteins are then purified from them. Since the gene for the protein is mostly obtained from humans itself, they are safe and less likely to elicit an immune response. These recombinant proteins are gradually replacing chemical drugs and are highly specific in their function.
