Abscisic acid (ABA) is a naturally occurring plant growth inhibitor and inhibits plant metabolism.
It was first isolated by F. Addicot in 1963 from cotton fruits and named it abscisin II as it was thought to promote abscission in plants.
Another group of researchers discovered a substance in plants that inhibited growth. They named it inhibitor β.
The same substance was called dormin by another group of scientists because it promoted bud dormancy.
Later on, abscisin II, inhibitor β, and dormin were shown to be the same chemical compound and it was named abscisic acid.
