Solution

Absorption of Water:

In plants, the absorption of water from the soil into a plant cell is due to various phenomena. These phenomena help in the movement of the water and minerals into xylem vessels via roots. Diffusion, Imbibition, Osmosis, Osmotic pressure, and Root pressure are some of them.

Imbibition:

  1. It is a process in which water is absorbed by living or dead cells or tissues.
  2. It is due to the great affinity to the water of substances like cellulose or proteins.
  3. These tissues of plants absorb water by surface attraction.

The absorption of water by living or dead tissue is called imbibition.
