During the process of respiration, pyruvic acid is produced in the process of glycolysis. The three carbon atom containing pyruvic acid is oxidatively decarboxylated to two carbon atom containing compound acetyl CoA by the action of enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase. The acetyl CoA then enters the Krebs cycle. The first reaction of Krebs cycle catalyzed by enzyme citrate synthase. During this one unit of acetyl CoA is fused with one unit of oxaloacetic acid to generate one molecule of citric acid.
