Darwin’s fitness refers only to reproductive fitness. It is the capacity of a variant type of organism to invade and displace the resident population in competition for the available resources. The invading organism possesses suitable variations and is able to transfer these variations to the next generation because of reproductive fitness. According to him, those organisms who are better fit in an environment, produce more progeny than others. These organisms will survive more and hence get selected by nature. This will in turn increase their progeny in the successive generations in a population. He called it as natural selection and implied it as a mechanism of evolution.
