According to Lamarckism, the characters acquired by the organisms, during the course of their life time gets inherited by their progeny. For example: the long neck trait of giraffes.
According to Lamarck, a change in environment brings about changes in organisms. It gives rise to new needs. New needs or desires produce new structures and change habits of the organisms. Thus new characters are not developed if they are not needed.
Chances of each progeny being exactly similar to their parents is only in possible in an asexual mode of reproduction. Sexual reproduction produces variations. Lamarck, however believed that all progenies inherited only the changes acquired by their parents.
