Force is an entity which causes the change in state of an object. According to Newton's first law of motion, an object has a tendency to remain in its current position unless an external force is applied.
Suppose an object is kept on the ground at the state of rest. If we want to move it, we have to apply a force on it. Similarly, if we want to stop a moving object, we have to apply a force.
