Solution
The correct option is C Photosynthetic utilisation of CO2 in guard cells.. Steward's starch hydrolysis theory states that interconversion of starch and sugar is responsible for opening and closing of stomata. During daytime, photosynthesis takes place in guard cells. Hence its carbon dioxide concentration decreases leading to an increase in pH. Then starch is converted to glucose-1- phosphate followed by its conversion to glucose-6- phosphate. Glucose-6- phosphate then breaks into glucose and phosphate. This glucose is soluble in the cytoplasm of guard cells. Due to this water potential of guard cells increases leading to endosmosis. Hence guard cells become turgid causing opening of the stoma. Thus the correct answer is option B.
