Question

According to VSEPR theory predict the geometry and shape of I3+ion.

Open in App
Solution

VSEPR (valence shell electron pair repulsion )theory is used to predict the geometry and shape of the molecule based on a number of electron pairs surrounding the central metal atom or ion.

The formula for determining the hybridization is:

=1/2{No of valence electron in central atom+ Monovalent atom attached to central metal atom+anionic charge-cationic charge}

Applying the equation to the I3+ion,

1/2[7+2-1+0]=4= sp3 where iodine has seven valence electrons.

The valency of iodine is one since it belongs to group 17 of the periodic table and needs one electron to complete octet configuration.

The central atom has 6 electrons because of the one positive charge.

The electron pair which doesn't take part in bond formation is called the lone pair.

lone pair will be an upside, thus making a bent shape.
