Question

Account for the following:
(i) In the series Sc to Zn, the enthalpy of atomisation of zinc is the lowest.
(ii) Eovalue for the Mn3+/Mn2+ couple is much more positive than that for Cr3+/Cr2+.

Solution

(i) Enthalapy of atomisation of zin C is lowest i.e., 126kJmol1
Due to the absence of these unpaired electrons, the inter atomic electron bonding is the weakest in Zn and as a result it has least enthalapy of atomisation
(ii) Mn+3+eMn+2
[Ar]3d44so[Ar]3d54soEo1
Cr+3+eCr+2
[Ar]3d345o[Ar]3d44soEo2
Due to half filled stability in Mn+2 Eo1 is more +Ve than Eo2
