Adam has $ 1.50. He only has quarters and nickels with a total of 14 coins. How many quarters does he have? [ 1 quarter = 1/4*1 dollar; 1 nickel = 1/20* 1 dollar ]
Let ‘q’ be the number of quarters and ‘n’ be the number of nickels. Therefore the total number of coins q + n = 14…… (Eq. 1)
The total amount = 0.25q + 0.05n = 1.50………(Eq.2).
Now, from (Eq1) , q = 14 - n. Substitute this value of q in (Eq.2) and solve for n.
0.25(14 - n ) + 0.05n = 1.50
3.5 - 0.2n = 1.5
0.2n = 2
ஃ n= 10
Use this value of n in Eq 1 and get q = 4
