Let's add 23.456 and 12:

Step 1: Add a decimal point and three zeros to the right of the number 12 to have 3 digits after a decimal point i.e. 12.000 because 23.456 has 3 digits after the decimal point

Step 2: Align the decimal numbers according to their place values one below the other i.e. allign the thousandths digits 6 and 0, allign the hundredths digits 5 and 0, allign the tenths digits 4 and 0, allign the ones digits 3 and 2 and allign the tens digits 2 and 1.
