Adding the algebraic expressions
Given terms are $3 x y, - 5 x y, 7 x y$
Since the given terms are like terms. So, the sum of two or more like terms is a like term whose numerical coefficient is the sum of coefficients of given like terms.
Therefore, by adding the like terms we have to add their coefficients
$3 x y + (- 5 x y) + 7 x y = 3 x y + (- 5) x y + 7 x y = [3 + (- 5) + 7] x y = [10 + (- 5)] x y = 5 x y$
Hence, the required sum is $5 x y$
