Question

Add the following expressions using both the horizontal method and column method:

32p-12q+r and -2p+4q-32r

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Adding them by the horizontal method

Horizontal method: Taking care of signs, write all expressions in a horizontal line and group like terms together. Now, add these like terms and get the required sum.

We have 32p-12q+r and -2p+4q-32r

Now,

(32p-12q+r)+(-2p+4q-32r)=32p-12q+r-2p+4q-32r=32p-2p-12q+4q+r-32r=(32-2)p+(-12+4)q+(1-32)r=3×12×1-2×21×2p+-1×12×1+4×21×2q+1×21×2-3×12×1r=32-42p+-12+82q+22-32r=3-42p+-1+82q+2-32r=-12p+72q-12r

Step 2: Adding them by the column method

Column method: Write each expression in separate lines such that their like terms lie in the same vertical column. Taking care of signs, add each column.

32p-12q+r+-2p+4q-32r_____________-12p+72q-12r______________

Hence, the required sum is -12p+72q-12r
