$\therefore \frac{-5}{9}=\frac{(-5\times (1\left)\right)}{(9\times (1\left)\right)}=\frac{-5}{9}$

and $\frac{2}{3}=\frac{(2\times (3\left)\right)}{(3\times (3\left)\right)}=\frac{6}{9}$

Now, their denominator is same.

So,

$\frac{-5}{9}+\frac{6}{9}=\frac{-5+6}{9}=\frac{1}{9}$
