Solution
Addition of O2 to the reaction vessel where 2SO2+O2⇌2SO3
are at equilibrium changes the equilibrium concentration of reactants and products. This reaction is the formation of sulphur trioxide. It is used in the manufacture of sulphuric acid by contact process. When oxygen is added, the equilibrium will shift in the forward direction. This will increase the concentration of sulphur trioxide and decrease the concentration of sulphur dioxide. Similar effect is observed when sulphur dioxide gas is added to the equilibrium mixture.
