Question

Addition of ozone molecule to alkene to form ozonide is known as:

Open in App
Solution

Ozonolysis:-

  • Ozonolysis is basically the oxidation of alkenes with the help of ozone followed by hydrolysis.
  • The main products formed during the reactions are alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, or carboxylic acids.
  • The complete reaction is:

Mechanism:-

Step 1: Formation of Carbonyl oxide

  • The electrophilic addition of ozone to the carbon-carbon bond present in the alkenes forms the molozonide intermediate which is very unstable.
  • Due to this high instability, the molozonide intermediate continues reacting that is breaking apart to form a carbonyl molecule and a carbonyl oxide molecule
  • The reaction is as follows:

Step 2: Formation of Ozonide

  • The carbonyl molecule and the carbonyl oxide molecule that is formed in the first step rearrange themselves.
  • Thus reforming to create a more stable ozonide intermediate.
  • The reaction is as follows:

Step 3: Hydrolysis

  • The ozonide formed is now hydrolyzed.
  • The products thus formed are Ketone and Carboxylic acid.
  • The reaction is as follows:

Therefore, the addition of ozone molecules to the alkene to form ozonide is known as Ozonolysis.
